Trent Cone-Doherty was among those to return to the starting line-up at Carrington after recovering from a recent injury.

Liverpool started well and had a number of opportunities to go ahead in the early stages. United’s first game was mostly against the run of play: James Scanlon put the hosts ahead after quarter of an hour.

Their advantage lasted only five minutes, and the 15-year-old the Egyptian Karim Ahmed, who continues to make a name for himself at U18 level, won a penalty which was converted by captain Terence Miles.

Both sides had opportunities to take the lead before the break, with Cone-Doherty going close twice, but the score remained level at the break.

United had chances to take the lead early in the second period and the game turned on the hour mark when Reds defender Callum Scanlon was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

The home side made the most of their numerical advantage, Manny Norkett putting them ahead shortly after, before full-back Jace Fitzgerald made it 3-1 with a spectacular strike from 35 yards.

Bridge-Wilkinson’s side continued to attack but could not equalise. Defeat leaves them sixth in the Premier League Under-18 table, with United third.
