Nine people have been killed in a tragic shooting during Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, California. Videos on social media showed police officers responding to the attack and medical personnel tending to the victims. According to Sergeant Bob Bowes of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting happened at a business and was carried out by a male suspect.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detectives were called to assist the Monterey Park Police Department in their investigation into a shocking shooting death Saturday night.
The shooting tragically left nine dead during what was supposed to be one of the most joyous events of the season, a two-day festival attended by tens of thousands of people.
Reports say that: “The incident happened near a popular dance club around 10:00 p.m., prompting passersby to take all kinds of drastic measures to stay safe, such as taking refuge in restaurants like Seung Won Choi’s seafood business.”

Kenneth Mejia, the city comptrollertweeted his condolences to those who lost loved ones and added that Monterey Park is home to one of the largest Asian communities in Los Angeles County.
Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, although many were left shaken and saddened by what they heard; a gunman with a machine gun was said to have fired several rounds. Additional information will be updated as soon as additional information is provided by law enforcement officials.
Although many had gathered to celebrate earlier in the day, this tragic news obviously put a damper on the festivities.
