How did Amber Sheehy die?

Amber Sheehy passed away peacefully at 11pm on January 14, 2023. She didn’t want to wait another hour to turn nine years old. With her parents by her side, Amber passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was in no pain or discomfort, which was all we could have wished for. After fighting a battle she failed to win, Amber died with honor.

Her father John Sheehy shared the devastating news on Facebook.

Amber passed away peacefully last night at 11pm on January 14th 2023. She didn’t want to wait another hour to turn 9 years old.

Amber was so peaceful in her sleep with me and Amanda by her side, no pain or discomfort and that was all we could have hoped for. Amber walked away with dignity after a battle she couldn’t win.

Deep down we knew she was close to leaving us, she gave all her grandparents big hugs, kisses and told them she loved them this week as well as her brothers. Max and Hayden arrived to say their goodbyes in minutes, but she couldn’t wait.

We were truly blessed with our little girl and the extra time we had with her, now she’s gone and gone with dignity and pride, we just have to come to terms with it.

Sending love from all of us ❤️🌻❤️

English soccer team Horsford FC also shared Amber’s death on Facebook.

Amber, a Norwich City supporter who was awarded Canaries fan of the season in May, was diagnosed with the brain tumor medulloblastoma in April 2019 aged five after starting to experience headaches and morning sickness. To remove the tumor from her body, Amber Sheehy underwent surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

After Amber’s diagnosis, the family spent the next two years at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where Amber was hospitalized and underwent surgery to completely remove the tumor.

However, the family were devastated to learn that the disease had returned and was now incurable in April this year.

Amber battled this disease for three and a half years, smiling and laughing along the way despite having a bald head and tubes coming out of it. However, this has passed and she can no longer fight.

Sadly, Amber Sheehy passed away on January 14, 2023.

Army of Amber

The family decided to create a non-profit organization Army of Amberwhich will continue to create memories for the families of children with terminal illnesses.

Ms Sheehy added:

“We were told we had to start making memories with Amber and we sure did.

“We went to Disney, did city breaks, helicopter rides and drove cars around the race track.

“Amber wasn’t expected to be here now, but her fight is strong and her desire to make it another Christmas even stronger.”

“In reality, Amber might not even be able to open all of her gifts, let alone play with them, so we’ve changed Amazon’s gift list.”

“But as a family we agreed that the support we’ve received this year has been so life-changing and means so much that we want to make this a reality for others in our situation.”

From the charity’s website, people can make donations or buy and collect Amber’s army pin badges. Local entrepreneur Kevin Foley, owner of ten McDonald’s restaurants in the region, is helping the family launch the charity.

Amber and Mr Foley first connected when her Brownies group asked him to sponsor a litter pick which Transforming Local Communities did last year (TLC).

Mr Foley said:

“Once we heard the terrible news, we knew we had to do something to help.

“It’s a terrible thought as a parent to lose a child at any age and my heart goes out to Amanda, John and especially Max.

“I am determined to help but also support the family to move forward with any legacy ideas in the future.”

Amber’s last Christmas

The parents of Amber Sheehy, who is receiving end-of-life care at The Nook Children’s Hospice in East Anglia, know this will be the last Christmas they spend with their daughter.

Amber’s completion of therapy was announced in June 2021 and in December the family celebrated their first Christmas at home in two years.

Mr Sheehy said:

“I would like to urge everyone, all families out there, to cherish the moments with their children.

“Pick up a Christmas movie, get out the blankets and snacks, settle in with the kids and enjoy some quality time.”

Canaries fan of the season

The Canary Islands fan of the season has been recognized as a Norwich City superfan who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of five. For winning Michelle Duck Fan of the Season 2021-2022, Amber received a trophy and a t-shirt that was personally signed.

She received her awards at the Lotus Training Center in Colney later this month. As the May hero of the club, the participant also received recognition. She recently interacted with some members of the first team and was motivated by Tim Krul and Angus Gunn, who both play in goal, to announce that she wants to play in goal and express her desire to play for her first team next season.

Amber’s mom said,

“Amber is the bravest and strongest person I know.

“She is absolutely fearless and has faced challenges that no little girl should have to face.

“People learn a lot from Amber on a daily basis, including her friends and family who started #AmbersArmy.

“They know what it will mean to her and to have her name on a trophy at Norwich City is just wonderful.”
