To learn more about the cause of Nelda Roger’s death, we are trying to contact his friends and family. This section will be updated as soon as we learn new information about the tragic event that brought many people to tears.
Who was Nelda Roger?
In 1985, Nelda Sgaramella and Sergio Sgaramella founded Azure. Thanks to Nelda’s unique editorial vision, persistence and honesty, the magazine, which started as a small local tabloid, has expanded and developed over the years to become an authority on international design and architecture.
Nelda has invested 38 years of her love for Azure, which includes fostering the regional design scene, engaging the global design community and bringing them together in a unique, unrivaled platform. She promotes the possibilities of design, showcasing the innovative work of both established and emerging talent, and doing it all with intellectual power and ambitious visual style in a pre-internet era before design blogs, Pinterest and Instagram – and long before “design” itself is as famous in Canada as it is today.
Along the way, she interviewed many of the established greats, such as Ettore Sotsas, Alessandro Mendini, Enzo Mari and Gaetano Pesce, and wrote for and commissioned stories for a number of now-iconic practitioners, including Karim Rashid, Patricia Urquiola, Ron Arad, George Yabu and Glen Pushelberg. and David Adjaye, who were just starting their careers at the time.
Azure Magazine
Azure was filled with Nelda’s signature humor and spirit of intellectual and spiritual openness. She has inspired writers, editors, art directors and Azure members for decades. She teaches students how to interpret, evaluate and critique design, as well as how to make narratives about an ever-changing world.
Long before these areas were considered the purview of “design,” she broadened the definition of the term, fostering concerns about urban development, the importance of water, and the future of food. She and Sergio were constantly looking for ways to grow the brand, changing Azure Magazine to AZURE Media as the print edition grew in circulation and prominence.
“She pushed the definition of ‘design’, spearheading questions about the creation of cities, the importance of water and the future of food, long before those realms were considered within her purview.”
Everyone around her found inspiration in her boundless enthusiasm. Nelda was instrumental in the development of Design lines magazine, azuremagazine.com and the creation and administration of the AZ Awards. Under Nelda’s leadership, the annual competition grew in size and scope to judge architecture and design of the highest caliber, attracting over a thousand entries annually from the world’s top firms.
The competition was a first-of-its-kind awards program with a Canadian focus, an international focus and a star-studded jury. She was particularly proud of the AZ Awards, which culminated in an annual banquet that brought her much joy and brought together hundreds of industry leaders to celebrate design.
Azure received Magazine of the Year at the Canadian National Magazine Awards in 2000 under Roger’s direction.

Under the banner of Azure Media, Roger and Azure presented the 2011 AZ Awards, which highlight international architecture and design projects.
Karen T. Kang, head of partnerships at TikTok, who first met Roger in 2007 and collaborated with her in 2013, is one of many who remember Roger.
Khan told Dezeen,
“Nelda possessed a discerning eye that could spot true talent, often identifying designers and architects who would become visionaries and leaders in their field.”
“She had a gift for discovering and exposing emerging talent, both locally and globally, featuring them on the cover of Azure magazine, which helped propel many careers forward.”
“Her dedication and passion for the industry, combined with her ability to support and encourage emerging designers, have made her a true leader in the field.”
