FORMER Executive Director of Family Health Trust (FHT) Ben Zulu has died at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Correctional Facility where he was serving his death sentence. Let’s see in detail what happened to him and the cause of death of Benny Zulu.

What happened to Benny Zulu?

Mr Zulu died at Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe when he suddenly fainted and died. Ben Zulu, former Executive Director of Family Health Trust (FHT), died at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Correctional Facility where he was serving a death sentence.

According to official reports, it is clear that he died suddenly after collapsing. Zulu was sentenced to death by hanging by Lusaka High Court judge Wilfred Muma in May last year for the 2019 murder of 19-year-old Natasha Mkandawire.

Natasha was shot dead by a Zulu and her body was dumped in a bush in Mpandika area, Chief Mungule, Chibombo district after he abducted her from her parents’ home in Lusaka’s Ngwerere district.

Justice Muma said in his judgment that he was satisfied with the prosecution’s ability to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused shot the victim.

Zulu was the last person to be seen with the deceased, according to Justice Muma, who also said a gun was found at his home following an investigation. He claimed that blood stains were found on the seat of Zulu’s car.

The prisoner was then transferred to Mukubeko, where on Tuesday morning, when he was about to take a shower, he collapsed.

Authorities at the Zambia Correctional Service said attempts to revive him at the facility’s clinic were unsuccessful.

The death sentence of Benny Zulu

FORMER Family Health Trust CEO Benny Zulu has been sentenced to death by the Lusaka High Court for murdering his 19-year-old lover, Natasha Mkandawire.

Zulu killed Mkandawire on July 9, 2019. In his ruling on Tuesday, High Court judge Wilfred Muma said there was no doubt that Zulu killed Natasha because he did not report the incident to the police immediately after it happened, but instead reported it the following day in the evening after burned his shirt, which was stained with her blood.

Zulu tried to frame a policeman who was Natasha’s other lover for the murder. The 62-year-old man, who surrendered to the police after the killing incident, alleged that he was attacked by unknown people in Ngwerere area while he was having fun with his deceased lover.

Zulu claimed that he parked his car by the side of the road in Ngwerere area and unknown people knocked on the window of the car, after which when he opened the door, a scuffle ensued and Natasha was shot dead in the process. Natasha’s body was dumped in the bush on July 10 at around 06:00 in Mpandika District, Mungule Chief in Chibombo District.

The deceased sustained a deep wound on the right side of her forehead which was the exit wound from the bullet. Zulu, who was given the opportunity to prove his claims that his lover was shot by an unknown man in his own defence, chose to remain silent.

Passing sentence, Justice Muma said it was very difficult to distinguish the gunshot wounds on the deceased’s body from the bullet holes in Zulu’s motor vehicle, which had bloodstains on the front seat.

He said a gun was found at Zulu’s home during a search by police, indicating that Natasha had been shot in his car.

“I have no doubt whatsoever that the accused led the police to where the body was found. The accused was with the deceased at the time of her death. The accused was the last person who was with the deceased. On this point, the evidence adduced is so strong against the accused that there is no room for speculation,” Justice Muma said.

“In any event, if the accused was assaulted while he was with the deceased, why did he fail to inform the police immediately after the incident? All this shows the guilty consciousness of the accused. There is no doubt that the accused shot the deceased and went to dump the body at a place where he subsequently led the police.

Justice Muma said he was satisfied that the prosecution team had proved beyond doubt that the accused shot his lover and was guilty of murder.

“I hereby sentence you to death by hanging until the doctor confirms your death. May God have mercy on your soul,” Justice Muma said. After Judge Muma’s ruling, the calm Zulu bowed his head in acknowledgment of his punishment.
