The MechWarrior series has been an iconic part of gaming for over three decades, providing an immersive experience of piloting giant robots in a futuristic world. After a long absence, Piranha Games has recently revived the franchise with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and its three expansion packs. Now, the developer is taking things to the next level by working on another installment of the series. Though details are scarce, it is sure to be an exciting addition to the MechWarrior franchise, with a focus on single-player and co-op modes. Fans of the series can look forward to the upcoming game, which is expected to be revealed later this year.
The MechWarrior series first began in 1989 with the release of MechWarrior by Dynamix and Activision. It was a spin-off of the BattleTech tabletop franchise, and was followed by other entries from Activision, Zipper Interactive, and Microsoft. After 2002’s MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, the series went on a ten-year hiatus, though the titles are still available to download from unofficial sources. In 2013, Piranha Games released the PvP-focused platform MechWarrior Online, before finally releasing MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries in 2019.
Piranha Games’ upcoming installment of the MechWarrior series is sure to be an exciting addition to the franchise. With an emphasis on single-player and co-op modes, as well as the promise of an official announcement later this year, fans of the series have plenty to look forward to. In the meantime, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and its expansion packs will keep gamers busy, providing an immersive experience of piloting giant robots in a futuristic world.

Something to look forward to: After reviving the long-running MechWarrior franchise, Piranha Games has no intention of letting the series rest again. The developer is working on another installment similar to its last release, MechWarrior 5. However, be patient. There are few details and we probably won’t see them for a while.
This week, Piranha games president Russ Bullock announced that another MechWarrior game was in development. The new project will look more like a single-player MechWarrior 5 than a multiplayer MechWarrior Online.
Bullock confirmed the new name on an episode of the No Guts No Galaxy podcast. He said the game will be a separate release for PC and consoles with an emphasis on single player and co-op modes. It will be based on the MechWarrior 5 tech base, although Bullock didn’t specify what that means.
Despite revealing the development of a new game, Piranha has yet to officially announce it. Bullock suggested that the company will unveil the game sometime this year, perhaps in September or later in the fall.
A series of combat robot shooter simulators debuted in 1989 MechWarrior by Dynamix and Activision, a spin-off of the BattleTech tabletop franchise. The IP continued with other entries from Activision, Zipper Interactive, and Microsoft before going on a ten-year hiatus following 2002’s MechWarrior4: Vengeance. Unfortunately, these titles are not available in modern digital stores. Those interested in reviewing or researching the history of the game will have to download them from unofficial sources and use mods to run on modern operating systems.
MechWarrior returned to Piranha Games with the PvP-focused platform MechWarrior Online in 2013. In 2019, the company released MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries — the first traditional game in 17 years — exclusively on the Epic Games Store, and two years later moved it on Steam.
Since then, MechWarrior 5 received three expansion packs, and the fourth — Rise of Rasalhague — will be released on January 26. The expansion will coincide with a free update that will improve the AI and mech hangar, as well as improve the quality of life. Rise of Rasalhague features a 12-mission storyline, a new mech chassis, and an Infiltration game mode.
The BattleTech franchise also includes turn-based strategy games Crescent Hawk’s Inception (1988) and Crescent Hawk’s Revenge (1990). In 2018, Hairbrained Schemes released a new turn-based game called BattleTech.
