BBC apologized for the fact that due to pornographic noise, the broadcast of the FA Cup was interrupted live. See footage of the incident below.
There were loud groans as Gary Lineker introduced the third round replay between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool on Tuesday (January 17).
Confirming it was a “funny” prank, Lineker later shared a mobile phone photo he said was “taped to the back of the TV”.
“We apologize to all viewers who were offended during the live broadcast of tonight’s football match,” BBC it said in a statement.
Lineker laughed off the joke as he presented pre-match coverage in the studio at Wolverhampton’s Molineux Stadium alongside pundits Paul Ince and Danny Murphy.
“I think someone is sending something to someone’s phone. I don’t know if you’ve heard it at home,” he said, before handing over to former England striker Alan Shearer on the bridge for comment.
When the match started, Lineker shared a cell phone photo with three laughing emoticons. “Well, we found this taped to the back of the TV,” he wrote. “As far as sabotage goes, it was pretty funny.”
Later on Tuesday, Lineker appeared on the BBC’s Newsnight program and explained that he initially thought the video had been sent to the phone of one of the pundits. However, he soon realized that it was a joke.
When asked how loud the sound is in the studio, Lineker said he couldn’t hear what anyone was saying in his ear, which made it “quite difficult” to continue the report.
However, the presenter still saw the funny side of the joke and asked why the BBC should apologise.
“We definitely have nothing [to apologize about],” he said. “If you had told me this morning that I would be on Newsnight tonight talking about a porn scandal, I would have been horrified,” he added, laughing.
Youtube prankster Daniel Jarvis claimed responsibility for the prank, sharing a video on Twitter apparently showing him at Molineux.
Jarvis is currently serving a two-year ban from all gyms after receiving a suspended sentence last October. The prankster was found guilty of aggravated assault for entering the Oval cricket stadium and colliding with England cricketer Jonny Bairstow.
In other news, Wrexham AFC co-owner Rob McElhenny had to learn of his side’s shock win over Coventry City in the FA Cup via social media after US TV went down.
