Who Was David Crosby?

David Van Cortlandt Crosby was born on August 14, 1941. He is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter. In addition to his solo career, he was a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Crosby joined the Byrds in 1964. They had their first number one hit in April 1965 with a cover of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man” by Bob Dylan. Crosby appeared on the first five Byrds albums and produced the 1973 reunion album of the original lineup. He subsequently formed Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968 with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash.

“Lady Friend”, “Everybody’s Been Burned”, “Why” and “Eight Miles High” by the Byrds, as well as “Guinnevere”, “Wooden Ships”, “Shadow Captain” and “In” by Crosby, Stills & Nash My Dreams ” are among the songs he co-wrote or co-wrote.

For Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s self-titled 1970 album, he featured on the songs “Almost Cut My Hair” and “Déjà Vu”. His use of unconventional guitar tunings and jazz influences are well known. He released six solo albums, five of which reached the charts.

Along with his son James Raymond and guitarist Jeff Pevar, he also founded CPR, a jazz-influenced trio. Over 35 million records featuring Crosby, the Byrds and CSNY have been sold.

David Grammy winner

Following the release of their debut album, CSN won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1969. Neil Young joined the band for live performances, with their second gig being in Woodstock before recording their second album, Déjà Vu. Conceived as a group that could collaborate freely, Crosby and Nash recorded three gold albums in the 1970s, while CSN’s core trio remained active from 1976 to 2016. CSNY reunions have been held in every decade from the 1970s to the 2000s.

Health and death

In 1994, Crosby underwent a widely publicized liver transplant, which was paid for by Phil Collins. The news of his transplant caused some controversy due to his celebrity status and past problems with drug and alcohol addiction.

Crosby’s liver problems stemmed from long-standing hepatitis. Crosby suffers from type 2 diabetes and is treated with insulin to manage the disease. At a concert in October 2008, Crosby, looking much thinner than in recent years, announced to the audience that he had recently lost 55 pounds (25 kg) as a result of his battle with the disease.

In February 2014, at the urging of his doctor, Crosby postponed the final dates of his solo tour to undergo a cardiac catheterization and angiogram based on the results of a routine cardiac stress test.

Too old to perform live

In 2022, Crosby announced that he was “too old” to continue performing live, revealing: “I’m too old to do it anymore. I have no stamina; I have no strength.”

Although he later suggested that he would be open to returning to the stage in the future, his focus was on recording music, which he was doing at a “startling rate”. In a sad twist, Crosby also said at the time: “I’m 80 years old now, so I’m going to die pretty soon. Here’s how it works.

Tributes posted on social media

In a tribute shared on Instagram, Crosby’s former teammate, Graham Nash, wrote of his “deep sadness” to hear the news.

“I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to me and David more than anything was the sheer joy of the music we made together,” Nash wrote. “He leaves behind a huge void.”

In a statement to Billboard, wrote Stephen Stills: “David and I had a lot of run-ins over time, but they were mostly quick shots, but they still left us [with] callous skulls. I was happy to be at peace with him. He was without a doubt a giant musician and his harmonic sensibility was genius… I am deeply saddened by his passing and will miss him immensely.”

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys wrote that he was “heartbroken” and “speechless”.

One of his last tweets on January 18 was about the afterlife. In classic, quirky Crosby fashion, the musician shared a screenshot showing a Google search that read “Can we go to heaven with tattoos.”

The top answer read: “People with tattoos won’t go to heaven. People who drink alcohol will not go to heaven. People who eat too much pork won’t go to heaven either. Short people will not go to heaven.”

Until then, Crosby just wrote“Heard the place is overrated….cloudy.”
