Who was it Christopher John Leitch?
Christopher John Leitch was a New Zealand politician. From 2018 until the year of his death in 2023, he was the leader of the Social Credit Party.
Early life
Leach was first interested in football and cricket, but at the age of 11 he also developed a love for dancing (which was also a passion of his parents). First he danced for fun, then for competition. When he was between the ages of 15 and 17 he won competitions in the Auckland Region Youth Age Division and went on to win numerous national competitions.
When he was 18, he began both studying and teaching dance under Maurice Taylor, a Fellow of the New Zealand Federal Dance Teachers Association and one of New Zealand’s top dance examiners.
At the age of 20, Leitch moved to Whangarei where he opened his own dance school called ‘The John Leitch Dance Studio’ which served nine other Northland communities. He was a life member of the New Zealand Federal Dance Teachers’ Association, which was affiliated to the Imperial Society of Dance Teachers in London and registered with the New Zealand Dance Council.
Political career
Following in his father’s footsteps, Leach joined the Social Credit Party in the early 1970s “to try and change things”. His first political campaign was for Joyce Ryan, former mayor of Whangarei, who later rose to the position of head of the Whangarei branch of Social Credit. In 1984 for Social Credit and again in 1987 for the Democratic Party, he stood for office in the Whangarei electorate (renamed Social Credit). He was elected president of the Democratic Party in 1988.
The Democrats entered a four-party coalition known as the Alliance in late 1991, along with New Labour, Mana Motuhake and the Greens. He was elected to represent the Alliance in the 1992 Tamaki by-election, which was held as a result of the departure of Sir Robert Muldoon. Having broken numerous campaign promises, the national administration was unpopular at the time.
Leitch ran a strong campaign and led the National Party’s Clem Simic by eight points five days before Election Day in two of the three polls conducted. Leach, who lost the normally safe National seat, reduced National’s margin of victory to 29.5% and pushed the Labor candidate into a distant third, calling his close call a “miracle”. Soon after his campaign for Tamaki, he ran successfully as the Alliance’s candidate in the 1992 local elections for the newly formed Auckland Regional Services Trust. Until his decision to retire from politics in 1997, he remained a member.
As a party leader
Leitch campaigned in the North against the Trans-Pacific Partnership in 2015, and later campaigned in the same area against Chinese involvement in financing and building infrastructure in the region in 2017.
He stood for the Denby Ward seat in the Whangarei District Council by-election in late 2017 but lost. Leitch was elected party leader in June 2018 and the party decided to change its name back to Social Credit. Under Leach’s leadership, the party’s activities grew significantly, with more frequent press releases and sporadic full-page newspaper advertisements.
In a news release dated 8 February 2022, Social Credit opposed the government’s vaccination requirement. Leitch traveled to Wellington to take part in the 2022 anti-mandate demonstrations in Wellington and on 11 February 2022 he addressed the demonstrators directly. Leitch later demanded that the government pay everyone who lost their jobs as a result of rules requiring vaccinations.
Tribute to Christopher John Leitch
Many people expressed their deepest sympathies to his family and expressed how much they loved him.
I am so saddened to learn of Chris’ passing today. Chris was a good man with a good heart; I know this from working with him over the years when I was Deputy Head of Social Credit. His heart was always with the people of the country. His incredibly clever mind always spotted treachery and deceit a mile away and always understood how the monetary system led to many of our ills and how to fix them. He was a wonderful mentor. He fought tooth and nail, to the last day, to deliver a better New Zealand that works for the people. He never let anyone know how close to death he really was until we learned today. I have a lot of respect for Chris. Now he will rest in peace knowing he was on the right side of history.
