The cause of Moeketsi Molelekoa’s death has left the community heartbroken.

Who was Moeketsi Molelekoa?

Molelekoa, who was born in Botshabelo, Free State, became well known in South African and African football circles after making his PSL debut in 2014. However, his refereeing career was not without controversy; in November 2021, for a questionable selection, he and Jelli Chavani each received six-week bans.

A match in Durban resulted in the pair being found guilty of breaching Law 12 of the IFAB Laws of the Game by Safa’s refereeing panel. Informer Chawani awarded Amakhosi a penalty in stoppage time of this match between AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs after speaking to his assistant Molelekoa. Replays revealed that the ensuing spot-kick that led to the Chiefs’ equalizer was not a handball, therefore the decision was wrong.

However, Molelekoa had recovered from the incident and as a result of his impeccable calling and management of the game rose to a position among the most respected match referees in the area.

Last Saturday at the Orlando Stadium, Molekekoa was second assistant as the Orlando Pirates rallied for a 3-1 win over the Golden Arrows. Other important competitions this year were the Soweto derby which Kaizer Chiefs won 1-0 over Pirates at the FNB Stadium when he was the second assistant.

In June and July last year, he participated in the COSAFA Cup in Durban. He then began to make a name for himself in the professional ranks in 2015 competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship before moving up the DStv Premiership ladder. He has also represented his country in the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Champions League.
