Your favorite idols took the time to answer some of the most important questions related to K-pop in a new documentary!
Original by TVING “K-Pop Generation” introduces a new format of “factual entertainment” by adding archival and dramatization to a documentary. Top-notch K-pop artists including Kangta, Super Junior’s Leeteuk, Sunmi, SHINee’s Minho, 2PM, Highlight, EXO’s Suho, MAMAMOO’s Hwasa, NCT’s Doyoung, Stray Kids, TXT, AleXa, ENHYPEN, IVE, and LE SSERAFIM as well as foreign artists JO1, SB19 and NiziU will appear according to the theme of each episode.
Following the release of the first teaser, TVING has released another sneak preview of the documentary, which will shed light on the fast-growing K-pop industry and the lives of K-pop idols in it.
The trailer shows a number of stars representing several generations of K-pop sitting down to talk about what it means to be an idol, the music they make, their fans and the expectations that accompany them every step of the way. Stray Kids’ IN describes K-pop as an all-encompassing formal art, referring to how all the components build up the overall picture we see.
Kim Do Hoon, CEO of RBW, commented that the fans are what made this entire industry possible. “It was really interesting,” says SHINee’s Mino. “I haven’t done anything, so why should I? [fans] like me?”
The teaser then highlights the influence that K-pop has on the world, despite what the idols may feel. Fans who have created YouTube channels to show their love for K-pop, K-pop critics and even academics share their opinions on the music genre and industry, and praise the influence it has had on a global scale.
Lee Sung-soo, The CEO of SM Entertainment commented, “This is a game where there is no right answer. That’s because it’s not as unambiguous as saying something like “one plus one equals two.” To prove his point, Highlight’s Yesob talks about how they started as BEAST and came back as Highlight.
The atmosphere gets a little more serious when the idols talk about some of the anxieties and fears associated with such an impressive body of work. TXT’s Taehyung says, “Back then, I couldn’t understand my world. It’s not easy.”
“I’m afraid they’ll think, ‘Huh? Where is the ENHYPEN I used to know?”, ENHYPEN’s Jeongwon admits, and IVE’s Ahn Yoo Jin recalls how many misunderstandings arise in her work.
“Why can’t I just quit?” he says of MAMAMOO Hvasa laughed.
But despite the hard times, these artists all have one thing in common. “I really want to remain an idol in the future,” says EXO’s Suho, perfectly summing up what every K-pop idol is probably thinking.
The teaser ends with the words, “The essence of K-pop is dreams,” making viewers feel inspired, hopeful, and curious to understand the whole story.
