The 17-year-old girl killed in a shooting Thursday afternoon near Indianapolis’ north side has been identified as Rania Grundy by the Marion County Coroner’s Office. Indianapolis police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder. Let’s see about it in detail.
What happened?
Indianapolis police are investigating a shooting after they found two victims in a car they briefly chased on the city’s north side Thursday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers received reports of a person lying in the road near the 3100 block of North Guilford Avenue. This caused a flurry of activity.
According to Sgt. Genae Cook, police couldn’t see anyone on the road, but did notice a red car driving “erratically” away from Guilford Avenue. The officers attempted to stop the car and chased it; the short chase ended at the intersection of 30th Street and College Avenue about half a mile away.

Cook reported that two people got out of the vehicle. One of them was shot in the leg and was transported to the hospital in good condition. The second person in the car, who was uninjured, was transported to the Homicide Unit for questioning. Cook said the driver was shot and taken to a hospital, where she later died.
Sergeant Genae Cook told News 8’s Adam Pinsker,
“The vehicle then came to a stop here at 30th Street and College, two individuals jumped out of the vehicle and immediately surrendered to officers. One person had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the leg. That person was taken to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The second person was uninjured.
“The driver was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. It was female. She had injuries similar to a gunshot wound. She was then transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity as 17-year-old Rania Grundy on Friday.
Grundy was one of the athletes represented by Athlead Indy, Inc., and they posted photos and videos of her. She was praised by the team as a motivational leader and fierce competitor. She was praised for being hardworking and bright by her coaches and teammates.
Investigation
Police continued to canvass the area of 30th and College as well as Guilford Avenue to find out what happened before the incident. Around 3:25 p.m., police asked motorists to avoid the area “for a while” after blocking off the intersection of 30th and College with officers.
IMPD tweeted a notice to stay away from East 30th Street and North College Avenue at 3:25 p.m. Thursday. A turnoff on Fall Creek Parkway North Drive, a well-traveled commuter route, is just a few blocks north and west of there.
IMPD officers are on the scene of an active incident at E. 30th Street and N. College Avenue. Community members are asked to avoid the area for the time being.
