After it looked like Kylian Mbappe’s future at Paris Saint-Germain was decided last summer, Liverpool received a ridiculous asking fee.
Mbappe has been a long-standing, if unofficial, Liverpool target since his first breakthrough in Monaco, although a move to Anfield has rarely been seen as a reality.
That hasn’t stopped the club from trying several times to gauge the Frenchman’s interest in joining, including last summer when he came close to leaving PSG.
Speaking to The Telegraph in May after he was approached by Real Madrid and agreed a new contract that earns him around £1million a week, Mbappe even said he had held talks with Jurgen Klopp.
The figures surrounding Mbappe’s PSG deal should be enough to explain why he never moved to Merseyside.
“Excuse me, 400?”@MarioCortegana says Liverpool made an approach for Kylian Mbappe last summer – and were quoted €400m by PSG…

But now The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana has revealed the price tag set by PSG for their number 7 as Liverpool have been linked again after the 24-year-old put pen to paper.
In July, Mbappe “expressed discomfort to the management about the direction PSG is going, demanding a “good enough team to seriously challenge for the Champions League title”.
This led to PSG’s decision to “open the door for him, but not for Real Madrid”.
Then, according to Cortegana, Liverpool made another request, but president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and transfer consultant Antero Enrique said any deal would cost €400 million.
That’s not a typo: €400 million, or around £350 million.
Of course, to be honest, this is an exorbitant fee for any player, regardless of the ability of a talent like Mbappe.
Liverpool broke their transfer record signing Darwin Nunes from Benfica a month before they inquired about Mbappe’s availability, forking out up to £85m.
Obviously, Mbappe can be considered out of Liverpool’s squad unless a completely unrealistic scenario unfolds where he intends to join his mother’s beloved club for free and agree to a pay cut of around 70 percent.
Instead, it appears to be Real Madrid or kill.
