Roma provided an update on his long-awaited debut album, sharing that it’s “very close” to completion.
The xx’s co-vocalist and guitarist – full name Romy Madley-Croft – has released her debut solo single “Life” in September 2020, but has not officially announced her debut album.
Speaking on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge today (January 17), Romy was asked about the status of her debut album. “It’s actually, and I can say it now, very close to completion,” she said.
“And it took a little longer than I thought, and thank you for your patience,” she continued, adding that, “I’m glad we took our time.”
When asked if the album will be released this year, Roma replied, “I mean, yeah, I really hope so. It’s out of my control, but I’m very excited and I’ve had a lot of fun working with the people I’ve worked with on this. And I’m glad people will hear it.”
She went on to say that her recent trance-inspired single ‘Strong’ with Fred Again… is a ‘hint’ at what kind of vibe to expect from the album, which she described as ‘club, dance, emotional’.
Romy also confirmed that there will “absolutely” be more music from The xx in the future, sharing that before Christmas she met with bandmates Jamie xx and Oliver Sim to write.
“There is so much love. It was a lot of fun doing something new, learning and getting new experiences.”
For of Roma solo debut at Live Lounge, she performed her single ‘Strong’ along with a mash-up of Stormzy’s ‘Firebabe’ and Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’, interspersed with Alice DJ’s ‘Better Off Alone’.
In November last year, The xx announced the 10th anniversary reissue of their second album, Coexist.
“The thing about the records is that they represent a specific diary, a moment of our friendship,” the band said in a statement.
All three members of The xx have also released solo material since their last album together, I See You, in 2017.
Sim released his first album, “Hidden Bastard”, last September, while Jamie xx’s latest solo single, the disco-infused Kill Dem, was also released in September.
In October, Sim also promised that “there will be more music from The xx in the future.
In a 2020 Lifetime review, NME said the single “shows her true colors” in a song that has become a “masterclass in pandemic pop”.
