Pop stars shared their anger after Great Britain The government has blocked a bill to reform gender recognition in Scotland.
It is the first time the UK has exercised its right to block a parliamentary bill in Scotland since 25 years after devolution.
In December, Scotland passed the Gender Recognition Reform Act, which allows 16-year-olds to legally change their assigned gender. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called it a “historic equality day” and the new move to block it was a “frontal attack” on the Scottish Parliament.
Secretary for Scotland Alistair Jack said in announcing the planned blocking of the bill: “I have decided to make an order under section 35 of the Scotland Act 1998 preventing the Scottish Parliament (Scotland) Gender Recognition Reform Bill from being passed with Royal Assent.”
“After careful and thorough consideration of all the relevant recommendations and policy implications, I am concerned that this law will have a negative impact on the operation of British equality law.”
He added: “Transgender people who are going through the process of changing their legal gender deserve our respect, support and understanding. My decision today concerns the implications of the legislation for the operation of equality protection in the UK and other reserved matters. I did not take this decision lightly.”
In a statement posted on Twitter about the news, Sturgeon wrote: “This is a frontal attack on our democratically elected Scottish Parliament and its ability to make its own decisions on devolved matters.
“@scotgov will defend the law and support the Scottish Parliament. If this Westminster veto works, it will be the first of many.”

In a statement on its website, the LGBTQ + The charity Stonewall responded: “Trans people are at high risk of becoming victims of hate crime. They wait years and years to get their first appointment with health professionals who can support their transition. Transgender children are bullied in our schools. Trans adults are harassed at work.
“The UK Government must focus on developing and implementing a strategy that will improve the lives of all LGBTQ+ people, including transgender people, without causing them further harm.’
The statement added: “Despite the small population, transgender people live in every community in the UK. These are our classmates, our colleagues, our friends and our family. However, the Prime Minister’s decision today sees transgender people as a threat to be contained, not as citizens to be respected.
We are saddened that the Prime Minister has taken unprecedented steps to block the implementation of the Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill.
These are not the actions of a government that can stand on the international stage as a defender of LGBTQ+ rights.

Entertainment stars also shared their anger at the decision and the Years & Years frontman Ollie Alexander wrote: “It’s amazing that Theresa May was the one who promised to reform the GRA back in 2017, and now the same government is blocking any reforms. . I’m not surprised to see that the Tories have completely abandoned transgender people – I don’t think they’ve ever really cared.
“The GRA is out of date, it needs to be reformed – UK public consultations in 2018 showed that most people agree.”

Anna Calvi added: “Bloody hell… The Tories are trying to distract us from the collapse of the NHS and the cost of living crisis by attacking transgender people and making them scapegoats. A black day for democracy.”
Elsewhere, The Heirs star. Brian Cox recently defended J. K Rowling, despite her comments about the transgender community, saying the reform bill was “long overdue”.
“I really don’t like the way they treat her,” Cox told Laura Kuensberg. “I actually think she has a right to an opinion, she has a right to say what she feels as a woman, she has a right to say what she thinks about her body.”
He added: “There is no one better than a woman. So I feel like people were a bit arrogant in their attitude towards J. K. Rowling to be honest.

A truly appalling, backwards decision that everyone should oppose. This is an affront to LGBTQ+ rights, but also to our whole democracy, Scotland, devolution and equality.
Trans rights are human rights. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We will not stop fighting.🏳️⚧️⚧️ https://t.co/gCHWVxyN6I

Tories are not defenders of human rights. They are historical oppressors of minorities.
In the 1980s they favored gay and bisexual people: today they favor trans people, while the progressive parties in Scotland are trying to protect a beleaguered and oppressed minority.
