Barrie resident Darcy Coria made history by being the first woman of color to win the Miss Wales title in 2022. On Sunday, May 8, the 21-year-old was announced as the winner at the event in Newport.
Darcy is the first person of color to be named Miss Wales in the pageant’s 70-year history. She has been involved in the Together Stronger criminal justice plan against racism in Wales and is an active advocate for black rights.

She also volunteered for Race Equality First, a group that promotes the integration of racial and ethnic minorities into society by promoting their physical fitness.
She outlined her aims in her Miss Wales biography, including continuing to fight for equality for all ethnic groups in Wales and empowering Welsh women to pursue their aspirations.

Darcy entered the Miss Wales 2022 pageant after competing in 2019 and finishing as second runner-up. Darcy, whose father is of Jamaican descent and whose mother is white, said: “I am incredibly ecstatic to win and feel so honored to be Miss Wales 2022.
I want to express my gratitude to my friends, family and those who have helped me along the way. More than anything, I feel honored to be the first woman of color to win the title of Miss Wales. I’m very excited to see where this journey takes me.
“I want to use my year to encourage young girls like me to realize that they can be Miss Wales or whatever else they want to be and I’d like to see more diversity on the Miss Wales stage in future. I grew up not seeing girls in the media who looked like me. I want to show young girls of color that they too can take up space and realize their aspirations.
