O2 Academy Brixton will be closed until April after a fatal stampede at an Asake concert at the venue in December.
People outside the venue on December 15 managed to get into the show, leading to overcrowding and cancellation of the concert midway through.
Two people died as a result of the stampede – 33-year-old Rebecca Ikumelo and 23-year-old security guard Gabby Hutchinson. The third participant, aged 21, remains in hospital in critical condition.
After the O2 Academy Brixton’s license was temporarily suspended until January 16, Lambeth Council said they would meet again that day to discuss the future of the venue. Before the meeting, a representative of Academy Music Group (AMG), the company that runs the venue, said it would be closed voluntarily until April while investigations continued. It was then announced at the meeting that the stadium’s license would also be suspended for three months.
Lambeth Council has the right to suspend the facility’s license or revoke it permanently.
After the closure, many concerts in this venue moved to new venues in London. January dates for Wallows, Sleep Token and PVRIS have been moved to the Eventim Apollo, while Dry Cleaning and Beartooth’s March gigs will now take place at The Roundhouse and OVO Arena Wembley respectively. Palaye Royale has promised to announce new locations in the week starting January 16.
Despite reports that Pendulum’s London gigs in March have been cancelled, a source close to the band confirmed to NME that this is not the case and a new venue will be announced soon.
