“It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that we have all lost our best friend. Lynn Bremer fought cancer as long as she could. He passed away early this morning, peacefully, with his wife and son by his side.

Hemmert says the station will dedicate a special block of programming to Brehmer starting Monday at 10 a.m., the time Brehmer’s show usually starts.

Lynn Bremer’s cause of death was prostate cancer.

On July 12, 2022, Bremer announced on the radio that he was battling prostate cancer and would be taking a leave of absence from WXRT beginning July 15 to receive chemotherapy.

He said,

“From Monday I will start a long period of chemotherapy,”

“I need to take time off from my radio show.”

“I have the full support of my family and friends and WXRT to see me through this medical leave. What can you do? Only this one. Allow me the kindness you have always shown me. I will miss spending time with you every day, but I hope this too shall pass and one day later I will brightly announce on the 93XRT airwaves, “It’s Friday. It’s great to be alive.”

He had been battling prostate cancer for some time. He underwent several radiation treatments, biopsies, CT scans, MRIs and drug therapy. Although the cancer was found and treated early, it spread to places it shouldn’t have.

Unfortunately, on January 22, 2023, he died of cancer.

The cause of Lynn Bremer’s death left the public heartbroken.

Who was Lynn Bremer?

Lynn Bremer was a disc jockey and radio personality at WXRT in Chicago.

Bremer attended Colgate University, where he began working in the industry by filling in at the school’s student radio station WRCU-FM during the summer semester. In 1976, he received his degree from Colgate. In January 1977, Brehmer began a career in radio.

At WQBK-FM in Albany, New York, he worked as a disc jockey for the first time, earning the nickname “The Reverend of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Brehmer left his job at WQBK after seven years and moved to Chicago to serve as WXRT’s music director beginning in October 1984.

Brehmer spent six years at WXRT, three of which were named “Music Director of the Year” by FMQB. Brehmer won the title of “Music Director of the Decade” in 1989, according to Hard Report readers. He left WXRT in October 1990 and moved to Minnesota to work as program director for KTCZ-FM.

Brehmer replaced Terri Hemmert as morning DJ at WXRT in Chicago after ending a one-year contract with KTCZ-FM. For the past 20 years, he has hosted the annual Chicago Cubs Opening Day telecast on WXRT. And he was the first non-Cleveland DJ to broadcast live from the newly opened Rock and Roll Hall of Fame radio station on September 1, 1995.

“It’s great to be alive”

Brehmer’s name was used in a mass email from WXRT in 2009 that urged subscribers to lobby Congress on the issue of music royalties. He used Facebook to deny authorship of the mass email and retract his endorsement.

Bremer said,

“It’s just something they do. Send emails and sign them with my name without my knowledge. I will always be on the side of the musicians.”

He calls himself “your best friend in the whole world” and is on air from 10:00am to 2:30pm, Monday to Friday. His catchphrase “it’s great to be alive” was taken from Frank Zappa and The Mothers’ 1972 album, Just Another Band from LA

Lynn’s bin

Brehmer began publishing and broadcasting writings under the name Lin’s Bin in 2002. Writings are created in response to messages from listeners and continue as emails.

Bremer writes just under 100 essays a year. He claims to have completed approximately 1,800 pages of Lin’s Bin. With producer Peter Crozier, the essays are written and recorded in advance. The essays have not yet been collected into a book.

Tribute to Lynn Bremer

Many people expressed their deepest sympathies to his family and expressed how much they loved him. The news of this event upset his supporters and fans.

This is heartbreaking. I don’t even really have the words. I am angry. I’m sad. Not fair. Lynn Bremer he was the best man. Infinitely kind, happy, humble, positive. Someone who loved what he did more than anyone else I can imagine. I joked about how no matter how late at night the XRT show was, Lynn was there with a big smile on her face, introducing the band and loving the show. It’s been a really tough week for Rock & Roll with the departures of Jeff Beck and David Crosby. But now, saddest of all, is the passing of my friend and colleague and one of the greatest radio legends to ever grace the airwaves, WXRT’s Lynn Bremer. His talent is unparalleled.
