How did Maria Haynes die?

Maria Haynes died over the weekend at St. Catherine’s Hospice after a long illness. The mother-of-three has spent the past 40 years raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for St Catherine’s Hospice and Crawley Hospital.

She was chosen to be one of the Olympic torchbearers across Sussex in 2012 as a result of her fundraising efforts.

I was saddened to learn that Maria Haynes passed away at St. Catherine’s Hospice last night.

Born in Italy, Maria is nevertheless a true Crowley daughter, having devoted herself to the local voluntary sector for many decades.

The League of Friends of Crawley Hospitals has honored Maria Haynes with a certificate of long service after she has been involved in fundraising at the hospital for more than 50 years.

Who was Maria Haynes?

Maria was well known for her baking and produced mountains of cakes which she sold for the League of Friends of Crawley Hospitals.

She also brought some cakes to the Crawley Observer workers who work out of the Boulevard office to share with them. She often attended the Buckingham Palace garden party and received a League of Charity medal for her great work in voluntary health.

Her Last Dance:

Among the many other things Maria did for the organization, she also hosted an open day garden party in Crawley. In addition, for 20 years, Maria organized a charity Christmas dinner dance.

Maria Haynes raised £3,000 for Cancer Research UK and The League of Friends of Crawley Hospitals at her latest dance at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Crawley. Henry Smith MP, Janet Lane, Chris Oxlade, MS, Osama Suleiman, Associate Specialist Surgeon at Horsham Hospital, and Adrian Ball, Consultant Surgeon at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital, were among the notable guests who attended the event.

Maria, who has organized this annual fundraiser for the past 20 years, announced that it was her last and thanked everyone who supported her and helped her in various ways over the years.

She was awarded Fundraiser of the Year at the Crawley Community Awards in 2016.

Tribute to Maria Haynes

Many people expressed their deepest sympathies to her family and expressed how much they loved her.

“Such a sad day for Crowley. This petite Italian woman showed us what true giving and service should be. I first met Maria when she was cooking for us in the middle of the night while working on the wards at Crawley Hospital as a nurse in the 1970s and 1980s and I have been close to her ever since. Her tireless work for the Hospital League of Friends and health charities in Crawley is second to none. Maria’s family had to share her with us and for that we should be eternally grateful. I will miss her fabulous smile and great big laugh, but she will always be in my heart. Goodbye my dear friend.” Janet Lane posted: “My dear friend Maria, in peace now, no more pain. Evening dancing in paradise will be amazing xx” -Former MP Laura Moffat.

“Very sad news, but thank you for sharing it. A very special lady who gave so much of herself to care for others. I recently bought knitted baby clothes from her at the hospital and we had a long talk. I know she wanted to be looked after by St Catherine’s. Thank you to everyone who loved and cared for her. Blessed be Mary, you were one of a kind .” – Tracy.

One of the worst things a person can go through in life is losing a loved one. Every journey should have an end goal. Man’s time on earth has unfortunately ended now that he has died.
