Leila Salyamova, a famous female diver from Russia, died at the age of 23 after a car accident in Karelia.

The horrific accident happened on Thursday afternoon while Salyamova, Russia’s top diving champion in 2021, was driving along the Sortavala highway in the Lahdenpohsky district.

Russian Diving Federation President Stanislav Druzhinin expressed his condolences after learning of Salyamova’s death, calling it “shocking news”.

“She was 23 years old and I can’t imagine the horror her parents and loved ones must be going through. My condolences to them.

On my own behalf and on behalf of the federation, I will say that we will help as much as we can, including with the organization of the funeral. We are now contacting relatives about this.”

Leila Salyamova cause of death

The cause of Leila Salyamova’s death was a car accident.

The accident on the 163rd kilometer of the federal highway A-121 “Sortavala” happened on January 12 at 1:30 p.m. Moscow time, according to the traffic police of Karelia. In the Lahdenpoh district, a collision between a Mitsubishi Lancer and a Volkswagen Tiguan resulted in the death of two passengers from the Mitsubishi and hospitalization of the driver and another woman from the Volkswagen.

The district attorney of Lahdenpohski visited the place where the incident plan was developed. The investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident has been undertaken by the prosecutor’s office.

It later became clear that Leyla Salyamova, a 23-year-old native of Saratov and diving champion in Russia, was the victim of the accident. The athlete was only 23 years old.

The cause of Leila Salyamova’s death left society inconsolable.

Who was Leylia Salyamova?

Leila was born on March 24, 1999 in Saratov. From 2007 to 2017, he trained Yuri Gutyakulov in the diving department of SDYUSSHOR No. 11. He is a member of the Russian diving team. She received the title of Master of Sports of Russia in 2012.

She advanced to the finals of the Russian Championships in 2013 and won a bronze medal in synchronized diving with Maria Kazakova at the Cup of Russia in 2014. She participated in the Olympic torch relay at the Winter Olympics in January 2014. Kazan-born Salyamova won a gold medal for Russian high diving and a silver medal for synchronized diving from the 2015 national championships.

In Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the legendary Stari Most stage, she participated in the renowned world series Red Bull Cliff Diving.

At the end of 2021, she became the first Russian woman to earn a place at the World High Diving Championships. She made it to the main stage after finishing 18th. However, the girl was unable to compete in the Global Cup due to the postponement of the world championship;

Salyamova made history by becoming the first Russian woman to win a wild card at the World Series of Rock Diving last year (26-28m cliff jump). In August, the athlete took the stage in Mostar, Serbia.
