Veteran British cinematographer Brian Tufano, who worked on films such as Trainspotting, Shallow Grave and Billy Elliot, died on January 14, 2023. He was 83.
The information was confirmed to Deadline by Tufano’s representatives at McKinney Macartney Management. Tufano’s former head of department at the UK’s National Film and Television School, John Wardle, also paid tribute to the cinematographer on Twitter.

NFTS director John Wardle said:
“Brian was a valued colleague and friend and I will always cherish my memories of working with him. I admired him and when I first joined the National School of Film and Television Arts he was always so generous, supportive and kind. “He was passionate about film, the creative process, the school and its students, and during his time with us he nurtured a generation of world-class cinematographers. He will be fondly remembered and missed by all of us at NFTS.”

Who was Brian Tufano?
Brian Tufano BSC is an English operator.
Tufano, who was born in London in 1939, began working as a projectionist at the BBC’s Gainsborough Studios in 1956. The BBC’s film department was based at Ealing Studios, where he later worked as a projectionist. He eventually worked his way up from trainee assistant to operator in 1963.
During his 21-year tenure at the BBC, Tufano worked with numerous directors, including Jack Gold, Ken Russell and Alan Parker. They all joined forces for the 1975 BBC TV film The Evacuees. After leaving the BBC, Tufano worked as an additional photographer on Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner.

He later collaborated with Danny Boyle, whom he met at the BBC, on a number of ground-breaking films in the 1990s. Together they produced Boyle’s 1994 feature debut Shallow Grave, which paved the way for their subsequent roles in Trainspotting and A Life Less Ordinary.
Tufano also assisted several up-and-coming directors, working on films such as Stephen Daldry’s Billy Elliot (2000), Damien O’Donnell’s East Is East (1999), Menhai Huda’s Jump Boy (1999) and Frank Rodham’s Quadrophenia (1979).
Tufano was Head of Cinematography at the UK’s National Film and Television School (NFTS) from 2003 to 2016 and has remained a visiting lecturer since then. He helped develop a new generation of cinematographers at the NFTS, and two of his students were Vanessa White and Charlotte Bruce Christensen (The Girl on the Train, Far from the Madding Crowd, A Quiet Place, The Black Narcissus) (Ted Lasso, All Creatures Great and Small Killed , because they are different).

Awards
Tufano has won numerous awards throughout his career, including the 2001 Bafta for Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television. In 2002 he also received the Special Jury Award at the British Independent Film Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Independent Cinema. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Society of Cinematographers in 2020, after winning the BSC Arri John Alcott Memorial Award there in 2015.
He spent the previous ten years in a semi-retired state. Gymnast, a documentary that accompanied the British gymnastics team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, was his last feature film.
