Monterey Park Shooting – Explained:

A mass shooting occurred on Saturday in Monterey Park, a city just east of Los Angeles in the US state of California. Police and other emergency services were called to the scene.

Initial indications are that more than a dozen people were injured, including some victims who died as a result of their wounds. Exact numbers were not immediately confirmed.

According to a law enforcement source, police were responding to allegations of a shooting in Monterey Park Saturday night that left several victims.

There have been some deaths, according to internal police correspondence. The owner of a seafood barbecue restaurant across the street from the scene of the accident on Garvey Avenue, Seung Won Choi, said three people broke into his establishment and ordered him to close the door.

They claim that there is a man with a machine gun nearby. They said the gunman was carrying several rounds of ammunition so that when his supply ran out, he could reload, according to Choi.

Choi said he believed the incident happened at a nearby dance club.

What happened at the dance club?

The incident happened near the site of the Chinese Lunar New Year just after 10 p.m

Tens of thousands gathered on Saturday for the start of a two-day festival, one of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations in the region.

On social media, police and firefighters were seen rushing to the scene on Garvey Avenue and treating the victims.

The injured were sent to several hospitals in the region. It was not known if the suspect was taken into custody by police. Many people in the neighborhood and beyond were shocked by the violence.

Los Angeles City Comptroller Kenneth Mejia tweeted: “Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city of Monterey Park where a mass shooting just happened.”

Testimony of the witness:

One of the witness teachers shared the following on social media,

“My student just informed me that the shooter had a long firearm. It wasn’t a gun. She was there and hit herself under the table. It was at the Star dance in Monterey Park. She didn’t see his face clearly”

One person wrote: “Crazy how we have some of the strictest gun laws in the nation and this continues to happen here.”

Another wrote: “But I thought you had gun laws that prevented these shootings. And killing is against the law. I do not understand.”

“According to witness statements, of course we’ll find out later it’s not a machine gun,” another tweet read.
