Who was Anton Wax?
Anton Woakes was a professional footballer from Lewisham, England. Born in 1998, Woakes began his career at the age of 16 after signing for Tottenham in the English Premier League. He later split the next five seasons playing for Portsmouth of England’s League One and Atlanta United of Major League Soccer.
Woakes started 64 of 70 games for Atlanta United in 2017 and 2020-2021. Despite having a good performance, he made himself available for the 2021 expansion draft where Charlotte FC selected him. He started 21 of 23 games for the club last season.

“Everyone at Tepper Sports & Entertainment is devastated by the tragic passing of Anton Wax. He was an incredible son, father, partner and teammate whose joyful approach to life touched everyone he met,” wrote club owner David Tepper.
He added: “Anton has made those around him better people in all areas of life and has represented Charlotte FC to the highest standard both on and off the pitch. He will be greatly missed by many and our thoughts and prayers are with Anton’s family during this heartbreaking time. The club offers its full support to all those affected during this period of mourning.”
Anton Wax Boating Accident: What Happened?
FC Charlotte defender Anton Woakes was involved in a boating accident in South Florida on Wednesday. Two boats crashed near the Miami Marine Stadium on Jan. 18 around 3 p.m., according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Wax was found unconscious and received CPR by Miami EMS. He was rushed to the hospital, but his condition never stabilized. Sadly, he passed away early Thursday morning.
Walks arrived in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 9 to participate in a 12-day training camp to begin the 2023 preseason.
