What happened to Deputy Darnell Calhoun?

A Riverside County deputy has died after being shot during a confrontation near Lake Elsinore on Friday.

At the time of the shooting, Deputy Darnell Calhoun, who was recently transferred to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, was attending a call near Lake Elsinore.

Sheriff Chad Bianco says a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department (RSO) deputy has died after being shot while engaging a suspect on a property near Lake Elsinore Friday afternoon.

The RSO identified the deceased deputy as Deputy Darnell Calhoun. His death was confirmed by Riverside Country Police in a tweet, saying:

We are devastated to report the death of Deputy Darnell Calhoun, who was killed in the line of duty this afternoon.

Calhoun, 30, began his law enforcement career with the San Diego Police Department. He worked there for two years before moving to Riverside County less than a year ago.

Calhoun was assigned to the station at Lake Elsinore. “He was the funnest, most positive, kindest, wholesome person you could ever imagine,” Bianco said.

Lake Elsinore Shooting Explained:

According to the RSO, the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Friday in the unincorporated Lakeland Village neighborhood, which borders Lake Elsinore, in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane, just east of Grand Avenue.

Calhoun arrived first on the scene. What happened next is unclear, but when a second officer arrived he found Calhoun bleeding in the street.

The second deputy and the suspect then opened fire, resulting in the suspect being shot.

Calhoun was immediately taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment. Unfortunately, shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday, the department announced that he had died.

According to police, a press conference with Sheriff Bianco will be held at 9:00 p.m.- 36320 Inland Valley, Wildomar.

Who is the suspect?

The identity of the suspect is not yet known. Officials said a second officer who arrived on the scene shortly after Calhoun was shot critically wounded the shooting suspect. That suspect was also taken to the same hospital.

The Riverside Police Department arrested the suspect. A tweet from the police department stating that the suspect was “in custody” confirmed the information.

The Riverside Police Department has not yet released information about the suspect or his condition.
