In the 24-second clip, a man walks down a supermarket aisle at a store in Australia, then picks up a microphone and addresses customers.
“The cooling system is temporarily down, so everything in aisle 15 will be free for the next two minutes. Thank you,” he announced.
His joke fooled some of the people in the store, with some customers rushing to the freezer aisle, grabbing the merchandise and quickly going to the cash register. A customer was carrying several boxes of ice cream in his hands, and his child was looking on.
The prankster then burst into laughter as shoppers tried to collect lots of frozen food, which they were later asked to pay for.
“Direct threat,” reads the caption of the video, which has gone viral, racking up more than 979,000 views and more than 43,000 likes.
TikTok split over ‘cruel’ prank
TikTok users reacted mixed to the joke in the comments, with some condemning it and calling it “cruel”.
“Funny but cruel to the ruined people who now think they’re getting a free meal,” wrote one user.
“Bruh, the customers will be very disappointed and the staff will have to return everything. It wasn’t funny,” said another.
“The problem is the hardworking people who have to put it all together,” agreed a third.
Others find it harmless and funny.
“My friend just started a full social experiment,” one user joked, adding laughing and crying emojis.
“As annoying and childish as it is, it’s also funny,” added another.
