Ubisoft has delayed the release of Skull & Bones again, while the company also canceled three unannounced games.
In September of last year, it was announced that the release of the long-awaited game was once again delayed until 2023.
The release of Skull & Bones is not delayed for the first time. It was originally announced at Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference, and last year it was reported that a long development cycle and numerous delays were caused by a series of director changes.
Now, in a January 2023 update, Ubisoft confirmed that the game will likely be released in 2014, citing “serious challenges as the industry continues to shift towards mega-brands and long-running games.”
The company added that the delay will allow for “a much more refined and balanced experience and increase awareness”, promising that players will be “well surprised by its development”.
Three unannounced games were also canceled by the developer in addition to four other games that were shelved in 2022.
Back in September 2020, Skull & Bones creative director Elizabeth Pellon addressed the game’s delay in a letter, in which she also outlined what fans can expect from the team in the future and reaffirmed her team’s commitment to launching the game.
“Over the past few months, critical questions have had to be resolved, such as: how do we modernize the classic pirate fantasy? How can we provide a more immersive and intuitive experience? How to create cool and memorable moments in the game? It was clear that to get answers to most of these questions, we needed more development time.”
In a statement released by the company in September 2022, it read: “Hello, privateers. Our team is working hard to polish and balance the experience before the global release. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the March 9, 2023 release date.
“We really want you all to get your hands on Skull & Bones and dive headlong into the dangerous and exciting world of creating your own pirate empire. To give you the best possible experience, we’ve decided to take a little extra time to make sure we can deliver just that.”
