Authorities say the gunman who killed 10 people at a California dance club also fired he killed himself. According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, the man killed himself when police approached the van he was using to leave the scene of a second shooting attempt.
72-year-old Huu Cang Tran was the suspect, according to Luna. No one else was wanted, he said. Authorities surrounded and stormed a white van Sunday afternoon they believe was driven by the gunman who opened fire on a ballroom dance class in Southern California, killing 10 people and wounding 10 others.
Before he got into the van, police spent hours surrounding it with bomb squad trucks and tactical vehicles. Authorities did not immediately identify the victim, whose body was found slumped over the steering wheel but was later removed from the car.
IDENTITY OF SUSPECTS
Earlier, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna released photos of an Asian man believed to be the culprit, but did not release the man’s identity.
Amid Lunar New Year celebrations in the predominantly Asian-American neighborhood of Monterey Park, a gunman opened fire at a ballroom dance class late Saturday, killing 10 people. This sparked a manhunt.
AUTHORITIES EXPLAIN HOW THE INCIDENT HAPPENED
Authorities believe he tried to attack a second dance hall but was unsuccessful. The van was found about 22 miles (34.5 kilometers) away in Torrance, another area with a large Asian American population.
Asian American communities in The Los Angeles area experienced a wave of panic after the shooting, which also cast a shadow over the Lunar New Year celebrations across the country. Other cities sent more police to monitor the festivities.
Five women and five men were killed in the incident at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, according to Luna, and ten other people were injured. A man carrying a gun then entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in the neighboring Alhambra 20 to 30 minutes later.
WHAT WAS THE MOTIVE FOR THE SUSPECTS? |
The two incidents, authorities say, are related. They did not mention a potential cause. According to Luna, the suspect brought a gun into the Alhambra Club and was confronted by club patrons who took the gun from him before fleeing.
Hours earlier, Luna said investigators were looking for a white van after witnesses said they saw the perpetrator flee the Alhambra in one.
“We think there’s someone in that car,” someone said. We don’t know their condition, but we will make it as safe as possible while we try to find this person. Could our suspect be there? Maybe, Luna said. Luna responded to an inquiry by stating that it was possible that the person trapped in the van had already died.
INVESTIGATION OF SPEC
A little later members of a A SWAT team entered the van and began searching its contents before leaving. What they found was ambiguous.
Authorities said they are aware of the suspect’s name on Sunday, but chose not to release it for fear it would make his capture more difficult. However, they posted a picture of an Asian man wearing a winter hat and glasses.
The type of gun found in the Alhambra was not disclosed by the sheriff. He said investigators believe the weapon used in Monterey Park was not an assault rifle.

A mass shooting took place on Saturday in Monterey Park, a city in the US state of California, located just east of Los Angeles. The incident was reported to the scene and police and other emergency services were dispatched.

Police and firefighters were seen responding quickly to a scene on Garvey Avenue and tending to victims on social media.
Multiple hospitals in the area received injured patients. It was not known if a suspect was taken into custody by police. The violence surprised many in the area and beyond.
“Our condolences go out to the families who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city of Monterey Park where a mass shooting just happened,” Los Angeles City Comptroller Kenneth Mejia tweeted.
WITNESS TESTIMONY
One of the witnesses’ teachers posted the following on social media: “My student just told me that the shooter used a long gun.
It wasn’t a gun either. She hit under the table when she was there. At the Monterey Park Star Dance, it happened. He couldn’t make out his face.
“Crazy how we have some of the strictest gun restrictions in the nation and this continues to happen here,” one man said in his comment. But I thought you had gun restrictions that prevented these shootings, another person wrote.

THE MOST DEADLY ATTACK

One of California’s largest festivals takes place in Monterey Park. An estimated 100,000 people had previously attended the two days of activities that were planned. However, in response to the shooting, authorities canceled Sunday’s activities.
When Tony Lai, 35, of Monterey Park, went outside for his morning walk and discovered that the noises he heard the night before were gunshots, he was amazed.
“I assumed it might have been fireworks. I assumed it might be related to the Lunar New Year,” he noted. There aren’t many fireworks here either. Watching this is strange. This place is pretty safe. Although we are in the heart of the city, it is safe.
The Monterey Park studio is about two blocks from Wynn Liaw’s home, and she expressed disbelief that such a crime would happen, especially during the New Year’s festivities.
The Chinese “consider Chinese New Year very, very special,” she said, noting that it’s a time when “you don’t do anything that will bring bad luck for the whole year.”
To show her Chinese family and friends “how crazy the US is getting with all these big shootings, even on New Year’s Day,” she took a photo of the commotion outside the studio.
One of the worst years: Mass murders
42 such incidents occurred in 2022, one of the worst years for the country since the tracker began in 2006, according to an Associated Press/USA Today database of mass murders.
A mass murder is defined by the database as a total of four victims, excluding the perpetrator. Two months after five people were killed at a Colorado Springs nightclub, there was more violence.
According to officials, President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland have been briefed on the circumstances. In addition to ordering federal officials to support the investigation, Biden said he and his first wife, Jill Biden, were thinking of those killed and injured.
